Description

The NGC1313 galaxy was for this image acquired with the CDK24 but not with a CCD but with a QHY600 camera. Processing required a different approach to avoid blotchy small details (Bin2 was used for collecting photons, the best solution was a drizzle 2x approach with a very slight deconvolution.

As stated before, its position is within the Virgo supercluster in the constellation Reticulum. NGC 1313 has a strikingly uneven shape and its axis of rotation is not exactly in its center. its uneven shape and very rugged appearance suggests a enormous collision with another galaxy some time in the past - but there is no evidence of another galaxy, which means, that NGC1313 probably has swallowed the intruding galaxy.

The distance to Earth is appr. 12.8 Mio LJ ( some sources indicate about 20 Mio LJ) and its diameter about 50000 LJ - about half the size of the Milkyway.
